A family business built on integrity and customer service with years of knowledge to back up our skills. In 1959 Les Allwood set up his sail loft in Brisbane and began Allwood Sails. Over the following years he built sails that featured and won many National Titles in Sabots, Moths, Cherubs, Skiffs, Cats, monohull racing and cruising boats. In the mid 1980's Les retired and then his son Clive, wife Wendy and staff assumed the running of the business that continues on to this day. Needless to say we are still heavily involved with racing dinghies as well as the cruising scene. We too have had champions use our sails in winning State, National and World Titles. Our sails are travelling all over the world on every size yacht imaginable. Joel McDonald has returned to run the business with Clive now as his offsider. Joel was Clive’s first apprentice and has previously been making sails in the Whitsunday area and for 3 years had his own loft at Shute Harbour. Joel is well experienced in all aspects of sail construction from small sabot sails right through to maxi yachts. He is a highly experienced dinghy, skiff and yacht sailor and applies his sailing knowledge to his sail making in a very positive fashion. There has been a resurgence in traditional boats being built that require traditional type sails. These sails can be made from a selection of synthetic canvasses through to modern day materials and encompass gaffs, spritsails, squaresails and the like. Over the years there have been many changes in the art of sail making, the most significant one being the use of computers to design and cut sails. In our loft we use only the latest up to date Autometrix software for sail design and then computer cut the sails on our twelve metre table to be cost effective and competitive with any other sail loft in Australia.
